🌄 A Late Summer Retreat Full of Rapids, Trails, and Campfire Laughs
Paddling, Tubing, Hiking, and Unforgettable Moments on the Dan River
There’s something undeniably special about late summer in the Carolinas—warm days, cool mornings, and water that practically begs you to take a dip. For two incredible weeks, Destination Kayak embraced that seasonal magic with a retreat to Hanging Rock State Park, where adventure, serenity, and camaraderie met in perfect harmony.
River Rhythms & Rapids
Each day brought a new adventure, with paddlers navigating playful Class I & II rapids or drifting through peaceful stretches that invited reflection. The Dan offered just the right balance of excitement and ease—ideal for building confidence, sharpening technique, and simply enjoying the flow. We mixed in tubing days for laid-back fun, letting the current carry us through quiet coves and playfull rapids. We created circular flotillas with our tubes, kicked back and enjoyed the fresh mountain air.
Trails, Waterfalls & Scenic Views
Beyond the river, we explored Hidden Falls, Window Falls, Upper and Lower Cascade Falls, and Tory’s Falls—each tucked into the shadows of the mountains, first revealed by the soft, cascading sound of nature’s symphony. These short hikes offered just enough challenge to feel rewarding, and summit trails gave us panoramic views that reminded us how vast and beautiful the world can be. Every step was a chance to slow down, “breathe deeply”, and reconnect with the land.
Campfires & Connection
Evenings were filled with laughter and storytelling around crackling campfires. Our community of paddlers—some seasoned members, some newer—came together with a shared spirit of adventure and openness. We cheered each other on, swapped stories, and made memories that felt like summer camp for grown-ups. Smiles, high-fives, and even a few spontaneous dance moves by the “Man of the Dan” (if you know- you know) made it all the more unforgettable.
Cabin Comfort & Wildlife Wonders
Each group spent five peaceful nights in the cozy Hanging Rock cabins, nestled among the trees and visited often by momma deer and their spotted fawns. These gentle guests added a touch of magic to our mornings and evenings with frequent visits, reminding us we were truly immersed in nature. The cabins offered a harmonious blend of comfort and quiet, giving us a restful home base after days filled with paddling, hiking, and heartfelt connection.
If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love to do something like that,” this is your sign. Whether you’re looking to reconnect with nature, meet new friends, or simply take a break from the everyday, our Hanging Rock retreat offers the perfect blend of fun, relaxation, and personal growth. No experience required—just a sense of curiosity and a splash of courage.
We’ll be back, and we’d love to have you with us next time. The river’s always waiting. The trails are always calling. Until then, enjoy the photos below from our Dan River and Hanging Rock adventure!

One of the best weeks! I had such a great time out in the gorgeous mountains, the quiet of nature, and the laughs…..oh the laughs! it was just enough down time to reload. What was my favorite day you ask? I can’t even say because they all were fun, challenging, and memorable. Thank you Justin and Laurie for showing us how to embrace life through Destination Kayak.
